Game 7: Los Angeles at Memphis

I’m sure LA is a fun town—I’ve never visited as an adult—but all this LA winning is a bit much :) That being said, the Clippers grew up a little bit today. Especially ain regards to their bench play. Nick Young might best be remembered by his 9 points off-the-bench in the 4th rather than his Richard Roundtree sartorial choices for game.

[F]Lob City’s bench saved them because Blake and even Paul were on the pine for deep stretches of the 4th; conversely, there wasn’t any bench production for Memphis to match the push by the Clippers.  This, more than anything, was the reason the Clippers won the 4th quarter—and ultimately, the game—but their ability to match the physicality of Memphis hopefully drowns out the shouts of flopping every time a Clipper gets a minor bump.*

The Clippers’ frontcourt matched Z-Bo and Gasol’s tough play with Reggie Evans and the best game of the series for Kenyon Martin (he replaced Griffin in the final 2 minutes of the 4th). Every front court player from LA should applaud themselves (even you, Blake) for fighting against the pounding of the Gasol/Randolph/Speights triumvirate and for ignoring the social media catcalls about their thespian talents. But it was the bench as a whole that should get the gold star on Vinny’s chart in the locker-room.** Eric Bledsoe, Mo Williams (still gunning!) and the prenominate play of Martin and Young led the Clippers deep into the 4th before the starters iced it at the end.

The Grizzlies fought and forced the Clippers to go on the road to clinch a series they comfortably led less than a week ago. If anything, this 7 game series will allow LA to come out with more passion in San Antonio on Tuesday. The Spurs will have been coming off a week break and could be rusty—Popovich not withstanding

For Memphis, they have a core. If they can get a full season of Gay and Z-Bo plus a healthy Tony Allen, they’re a team still on the prowl in the West. I’m not familiar with their contract situation, but I know Gay, Z-Bo and Gasol are locked up and you won’t find a better front-court not named the Lakers (and I might take Gasol over Bynum and Z-Bo over Pau right now). It’s tough to lose a game 7 in front of your home crowd, but the people of Memphis have plenty to look forward to. I think this team will be right back in the driver’s seat in the 1st round next year.

For LA, you better be healthy and continue that intensity in the next round. The Spurs are waiting, and their creaky legs are actually ready to run.

Final: Los Angeles Clippers 82 - MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES 72

The Clippers win the series 4-3

*I doubt it.

**I like to picture Vinny’s coaching the equivalent of 2nd grade home-schooling.

This is an excellent album if you are in the mood for slower back ground music that builds. Just an excellent example of 100% great music.

Dear Maddie: Stay!

For the last eight months, Idaho photographer Theron Humphrey has been traveling the country documenting awesome strangers as part of a project he calls This Wild Idea. But his companion on the trip, an English Coonhound named Maddie, has become something of a project of her own. Maddie is strangely fond — and meticulously obedient — when it comes to the “stay” command. Maddie will stay on a tree trunk, on top of a drip coffee maker, inside a giant tractor tire, inside a BBQ pit, balanced across a ledge — it’s like planking, but with Maddie, and many more positions. And so, five months into his trip, Humphrey started documenting Maddie herself under the aptly titled Maddie on Things. We asked Humphrey how he gets Maddie to stay so damn still.

What do you do when you’re not posing Maddie?

I’m a photographer most days, it’s what I went to school for and have fed myself with, but I’ve never really called myself one.

How would you describe Maddie’s temperament?

Maddie is a patient dog. I’d be at a friend’s house, and she would just stand in the middle of the living room. I figure most dogs would have laid down. It’s in her nature to stand still. But these days, she’s been trained on a “stay” command with food.

So, posing Maddie on, you know, a telephone pole. How do you pull this off?

None of them are very intense, or even high up really, except for one where she is up a half-cut-down tree. But the flat part on the tree was so big, she could have stood there all day. Most aren’t up very high … if you take an image from a slightly lower angle, it makes the world seem higher. She normally only stands still for 30 seconds, but I shot a video of my buddy playing a song, and she stood still for 2 minutes.

Is Maddie a genius? What’s she like when she’s not balancing on things?

Ha! This question made me laugh because I thought of Maddie sitting at a computer, with a tiny hat on, taking an online IQ test. But I’d say Maddie’s “nose” intelligence is high. She could track most anything.
